This concert will have a nostalgic flavour for Tony who started his career in Auckland in 1957 with the New Zealand Jazz Trio. He and Coral left for Europe in 1961 to perform in various European venues as a quartet or quintet.
They returned to Auckland in 1985 to perform at many venues including the Auckland Jazz Club. In 1997 the went to Australia where they performed as a duo for 5 years at the Hillcrest Coachman in the Blue Mountains.
2001 was their homecoming to Blenheim. Here they continued to play as a duo but were eventually joined by Robin Randall to form the Tony Theil trio. Robin has a very colourful musical background, band master New Zealand Army Band, jazz band leader, trumpet player and musical director for various show orchestras and presently head of music at Marlborough Girls College. He plays trumpet and flugelhorn and performs vocals.
For this performance the trio is joined by Libby Johns who has recently completed a B.Mus in jazz performance at Victoria University in Wellington and is presently working towards her Masters in Music Therapy. She plays alto and soprano sax plus flute.
The repertoire selected will cover a wide range of musical and vocal jazz and Latin American styles.
Tony's group will be joined by locals Pete McGregor on bass and Bruce King on drums.
