Fat Girls* Dance Club is exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a space to move joyfully, sweat, laugh and learn in an environment that celebrates and accommodates fat bodies.

If you love dancing, good company and wholesome, fun exercise, but don’t feel comfortable in traditional dance and exercise classes due to fat discrimination and marginalisation, this is the club for you.

All classes are upbeat, entry-level, educational and run by fellow fat babes. Please note that tickets are non refundable or transferable.

Our Block Two Classes:

July 3rd: Hip Hop with Monique Walford: This is Hip Hop old school styles - find your groove, hit those isolations, and leave the studio feeling pumped and powerful.

July 10th: Contemporary with Lizzie Murray: A sumptuous taster of this expressive and free-flowing modern dance form. This session will touch on floorwork, connected and lyrical gestures and organic, exuberant movement.

July 17th: Vogue with Monique: Opulence! You own everything! An introduction to the five fundamentals of this rich dance subculture - catwalk, hands, dips, duckwalk and floor performance.

July 24th: Street Jazz with Loural Volk: Live your music-video fantasy in this sassy, fierce street class. Get ready for slick hair-ography, strong silhouettes, and some seriously saucy hip choreo.

July 31st: Beginner Ballet with Lizzie Murray: Ballet for the modern girl! An approachable, fun twist on the ballet basics with a focus on technique, control, smooth movements and understanding your body.

August 7th: Burlesque with Monique: The glamorous art of the tease, with a cheeky twist. Explore whatever sexy means to you in this flirty expose of this dramatic dance form.

Our Values:
This class is for those who need it:
FGDC is for fat folk. If those words don’t describe you, we kindly ask that perhaps you consider not attending this event. Let’s keep this club a safe, inviting community space for those who need it. But please get in touch if you have any questions or queries about this.

Not just ‘girls’:
We created this class for the women in our lives who had experienced discrimination in dance spaces, and called it Fat Girls* Dance Club consequently. However! Our whanau who identify as trans, gender non-conforming or non-binary in any way shape or form are more than welcome here. These issues affect you and this space is for you too.

No mirrors:
At FGDC we are fat and proud! But we understand that everyone is at a different stage of their journey to self love, and that mirrors can be triggering. We also plain just don’t need them! The focus of these classes is on moving joyfully, not technique.

No weight loss language:
The kaupapa of FGDC is celebrating fat bodies, because fat bodies are awesome bodies. So this definitely isn’t a space for weight loss conversations or culture. (For example, we don’t use words such as ‘overweight’ or talk about losing weight.) So by all means, feel free to tell your fellow dance class buddies how rad they look in their cute af dance clothes, but be respectful and mindful that for some people, this stuff is still hard.

Every move is customisable:
We know that everyone has different accessibility needs, and this will be reflected in the dance programmes we teach. Our facilitators always start with an lower-impact modification of a move and scale up from there, so feel free to stay at the level that feels best for you.

Listen to your body:
These classes are about moving in a way that is kind to your body. So never push yourself or do something that feels unsafe or just not fun for you. You know your body better than anyone else, so make sure you listen to what it’s telling you. (Please bear in mind that FGDC is ultimately an entertainment product, not a medical or support service of any kind. By participating in FGDC you accept responsibility for your wellbeing while dancing with us.)
