Carter Observatory served as New Zealand's national observatory from 1941 until May 2010 when it re-opened as a visitor attraction, becoming Space Place in 2015.

Visitors can take a virtual journey through space in the Pelorus Trust Planetarium - a state-of-the-art full-dome digital theatre, then take your own journey as you walk through the world-class interactive multimedia space experience.

Discover our Universe, along with some of New Zealand's most prestigious telescopes and astronomical artifacts. We aim to inspire and encourage you as we celebrate the culture, heritage and science of the Southern Skies.

Space Place at Carter Observatory offers visitors:

- Planetarium and audio visual show and displays

- Public events

- Curriculum based education programmes for schools

- Heritage repository for New Zealand astronomy

- Telescope viewing: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night public viewing sessions (weather dependent)

Space Place is housed in a building of historical significance, with a historic 23cm refracting telescope that can be used for star gazing on open nights as the weather permits.

Please note that during school holidays we are open daily. To confirm our opening hours please check our website.
